The "Gerzymisch Stiftung zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses im Bereich Übersetzen und Dolmetschen" was founded in 1996 as a tribute to Hans Gerzymisch. It's aim is to support measures for promoting young researchers in translation and interpreting.

The Foundation achieves its aims by

  • Promoting and financially supporting international translation and interpreting conferences
  • Supporting the participation of young researchers in international conferences
  • Supporting advanced training in translation and interpreting (research)
  • Supporting young researchers in the publication of their research projects and findings

Activities

Since 1996 the Foundation has financed and co-financed several projects, publications and initiatives, including the

  • Advanced Translation Research Center (ATRC) in all its initiatives and colloquia since 1996
  • Saarbrücker Symposia (1996-1998) organized by the Advanced Translation Research Center (ATRC) at Saarland University
  • Euroconferences series (1999-2007) at the Universities of Copenhagen, Prague and Vienna as well as at Saarland University
  • A research project of MEUM - Modulentwicklung Übersetzungsmanagement (2004/2005)
  • MuTra Advanced Training and PhD School (since 2005)
  • Yearbook Series of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaft since 1999, renamed in 2012 as MitSprache book series at LITverlag
  • Übersetzergespräche 1-3 (Translation Colloquia, since 2013)

The Foundation co-financed the publications of the following individual researchers

The Foundation provided financial grants to

  • Jan Kunold/Saarbrücken for his research project on
    musical translation (2004-2005)
  • Min Sunwoo/Korea, Bonn and Saarbrücken for publishing her dissertation on
    Zur Operationalisierung des Übersetzungszwecks (Operationalizing the Translation Purpose) (published 2012 as the first volume of mit-Sprache (Lit-Verlag Münster)
  • Lihua Jiang/Saarland & Sichuan/China
    for starting her PhD on community interpreting at Saarland University

  • Martin Will for the publication of his dissertation Dolmetschorientierte Terminologiearbeit Narr Verlag

  • Jan Kunold, Germany (Monterey/Cal. MIIS 50th Anniversary Conference 2005)
  • Georgios Floros (Greece), Daniel Dejica /Roumania), Lihua Jiang (China), Sandra Nauert (Germany), June Sunwoo (Korea), Martin Will (Deutschland/Luxemburg), Tatjana Poznjakova (Russland) for attending the Euroconference in Vienna 2006/7)
  • Somayeh Amin (Iran) 2010 – 2016 for PhD schools in Fosano/Switzerland
  • Edmond Kembou (Cameroon) for presenting his PhD project (Lions Club, Zweibrücken 2012) and support before he was awarded a DAAD scholarship in 2012
  • Suchita Sakulchairungrueng (Philippines, PhD studies 2014/16)
  • Shahrzad Tajeddini (Iran) attending the MeTra Conference on Translation, Interpreting and Mediation for and by Children at the Centro Residenziale Universitario di Bertinoro (CEUB), University of Bologna-Forli, 2017)

The Foundation is member of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and the StiftungsForumSaar.

In cooperation with the StudienStiftungSaar, the Foundation provides financial support to international PhD candidates in Translation Studies (together with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaft DGÜD and the T&I Portfolios translation services GmbH).
